ART AT BISTANGO
BEN HECHT painter and photographer
Hecht's work seamlessly blends encaustic (tempered beeswax) painting and original photography. Some of his images evoke an ethereal longing for the 19th. century while others show a deep connection to the natural world of water, earth and air. Ben Hecht is a San Diego based encaustic mixed media artist. He has been a professional artist since 1994. In addition to operating Redlines Studio and Gallery, he directed Seven Directions Institute of Art and Science, a visual arts school he founded in 2001. Hecht received both his B.A. in Fine Arts and his M.A. from University of California Santa Cruz, and was voted 2009 Santa Cruz Artist of the Year. His work is in several public and private collections, including San Jose City Hall and Chapman University.
"machina obscura, or 'hidden machine' is a mixed media series blending original photography of the ocean, rocks, ancient walls, cracks along the ground and all sorts of tiny oddities with maps, charts, and ephemera from long ago. Gears, cogs, and clockwork echo the movements of planets and celestial bodies. Macrocosmic and microcosmic elements come together in a single composition. Each work is composed with layers and layers of encaustic. In this series I strive to blur the distinctions between earth, water, and sky. My hope is to create a feeling of all the elements blended effortlessly into one composition" , Ben Hecht.
